 Healthy Meals for Homeless Families

MANCHESTER, NH – Families in Transition – New Horizons (FIT), a Manchester, Concord and Dover, NH, based homeless services provider, received a $5,000 grant from Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund to begin a program to help ensure that parents and children who are suffering from homelessness are able to access nutritious food in a safe, supportive and welcoming environment.

The “Family Place” is Families in Transition – New Horizons’s newest housing and services facility in Manchester. There, over the next year, FIT will use the grant money towards its Healthy Meals Program. The program will offer nutritious meals for families who are homeless.

“Unfortunately, many people have to choose between food, housing, and other expenses and studies show that money devoted to food is typically the first to be let go,” said Maureen Beauregard, President of Families in Transition – New Horizons.  “We are grateful to the Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund for providing us money to help kick off our Healthy Meals Program.”

The Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund makes grants to tax-exempt organizations without regard to religious affiliation for projects that help people in New Hampshire meet their basic needs.  The Fund is operated by volunteer lay men and women who serve as Directors and who make recommendations to the Bishop of Manchester for grants to any organization in New Hampshire whose mission is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.  The Fund raises money through solicitation of individuals, businesses and philanthropic organizations.  An annual accounting of funds raised and disbursements is available at www.catholicnh.org/BCAF.

Families in Transition – New Horizons is a nonprofit organization that provides safe, affordable housing and comprehensive social services to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, enabling them to gain self-sufficiency and respect. FIT also owns and operates two thrift stores, OutFITters Thrift Store, in Manchester and Concord, NH, as well as a newly established commercial cleaning company, FIT Cleaning Solutions, all of which serve as economic engines to help pay for services that FIT provides. For more information about FIT, the stores, or the commercial cleaning company, visit www.fitnh.org or call 603-641-9441.
