PROGRESS CONTINUES AS THE FAMILIES IN TRANSITION AMERICORPS VISTA SERVICE YEAR ENDS

The release of the Families in Transition VISTA Program’s 2011-2012 Year in Review shows significant volunteer impact on New Hampshire.

MANCHESTER, NH – With another full year of committed service completed by AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) volunteers at nonprofit and government agencies across New Hampshire, the Families in Transition (FIT) VISTA Program releases its Year End Review. The data provided in the review indicates progress towards the fight against poverty in New Hampshire.

AmeriCorps VISTA, a program of the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS), comprises a nationwide network of volunteers who serve full-time for at least one year working on capacity building at organizations throughout the United States. During the 2011-2012 service year, Families in Transition organized and sponsored 29 VISTA volunteer members who came from 16 different states to volunteer at 23 different organizations located throughout the Granite State.

“Each VISTA member who volunteers in a professional working capacity typically serves over 1,700 hours in a year, which equates to a total value of over $1.2 million for all of our members,” said Pamela Punsky, FIT VISTA Program Manager. “These VISTA members helped New Hampshire organizations build programs, raise funds and provide services they would not otherwise have been able to.”

“The Corporation for National and Community Service is excited to see the fantastic work that the 29 full time AmeriCorps VISTA members are doing in New Hampshire under Families in Transition,” said Shireen Tilley, CNCS State Program Manager. “Members have helped write grants that will provide housing for homeless veterans, have helped at risk children to succeed in school, and have increased the capacity of nonprofits to reach those who are homeless and in need thanks to their fundraising and volunteer recruitment.  We are so grateful for the wonderful support and training Families in Transition has provided to these outstanding young men and women.”

The Families in Transition VISTA Program is one of the largest networks of AmeriCorps VISTAs living and serving throughout the state of New Hampshire. The program recruits dedicated volunteers and host sites to join the VISTA team, with the goal of improving the quality of life for the most disadvantaged members of our community. It is a program of Families in Transition, a Manchester- and Concord-based homeless housing and services provider. Established in 1991, Families in Transitions (FIT) is a nonprofit organization that provides safe, affordable housing and comprehensive social services to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, enabling them to gain self-sufficiency and respect. FIT has been a sponsoring agency for AmeriCorps VISTA since 2010. For more information about FIT, its programs and stores visit www.fitnh.org or call 603-641-9441.
