The second annual Wicked FIT Run/Walk will be held Oct. 26 at Rollins Park in Concord. We talked to Michele Talwani, director of economic development and marketing at Families in Transition – New Horizons, to learn more:
WHAT IS FAMILIES IN TRANSITION?
Founded, in 1991, Families in Transition – New Horizons was formed in response to the growing number of homeless individuals and families throughout the state of New Hampshire. We’ve been committed to providing only the most innovative, comprehensive and effective programming to help homeless individuals and families reach beyond the cycle of homelessness and lead healthy and successful lives. Since our inception, we’ve housed more than 4,200 people; more than half were children. Currently, Families in Transition – New Horizons has more than 200 housing units located in Concord, Manchester and Dover.
WHO CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF THE WICKED FIT RUN?
Families in Transition – New Horizons has been providing housing and services to homeless individuals and families since 1991, beginning with our first property in Manchester. We expanded into Concord in 2004 with two properties, 16 apartments, in Bicentennial Square. In 2009, we opened OutFITters Thrift Store Boutique at 20 S. Main St. where everything we sell is donated and 100 percent of the profits generated are used to help fund our housing and services. So, although we’ve been doing work in the Concord community for many years, we recognized that we weren’t well known in this area. Working with our board of directors, we decided to create a family-friendly, fun event to help spread the word about our mission and organization. It was two board members, Gayle Murphy of Concord and Stephanie Sledjeski, executive at Lincoln Financial Group, who came up with the idea of hosting a 5K in Concord as that “friend-raising” event in Concord.
WHEN AND WHERE IS THE RUN AND WHAT IS THE REGISTRATION FEE?
The 2nd annual Wicked FIT Run/Walk will be held Oct. 26 at Rollins Park, 33 Bow St. in Concord. It’s a great race for the serious runners, as the course is certified, but it is also great for the weekend warrior runners and walkers because the course is flat. Packet/bib pick up and registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The race begins sharply at 9 a.m. Pre-event registration costs are: Individual age 20 and older, $25; individual ages 13-19, $15; and kids 12 and younger race free, but must register. Same day registration is available, but will cost an additional $5. The first 300 pre-registrants will get long sleeve race T-shirts.
CAN PEOPLE DONATE TO FIT WITHOUT PARTICIPATING IN THE RUN?
Absolutely! People can make a donation at any point at fitnh.org or at the event. Another idea is to donate to a race team or individual. It’s really easy to do. And, any amount will help. We’re still looking for event sponsors as well. There’s lots of opportunities to get involved whether you run, walk, volunteer (we need lots of them!), donate to a registrant, or sponsor the event, we’d love the support.
HOW MUCH MONEY WAS RAISED AT LAST YEAR’S RUN?
Last year, the event netted just over $9,500! We were delighted by the support of the community. This year, our goal is to raise $20,000. As of today, we’re nearly halfway there. We’re really starting our outreach to let the community know about the race. We want people to grab their friends, family and/or coworkers and create teams and start to fundraise. We’ve made it really easy to do online at fitnh.org/wickedfitrun.
CAN RUNNERS WEAR COSTUMES?
Yes! We want people to come in costume! It’s not required, but absolutely encouraged!
WILL THERE BE PRIZES FOR THE BEST COSTUME?
Yes! And, great ones too. We have wonderful prizes donated by area businesses to give away to the fastest runners in certain age groups, as well as prizes for the best theme costumes for two to four people, best theme costumes for five people or more, best individual male and female costume, best FIT staff costume, best kid costume, most original costume, most traditional costume and scariest costume.
